We don’t call hair your “crowning glory” for nothing. Taking care of your hair – making it healthy, soft, and beautiful – is a top priority for us at Christo. Curly hair care isn’t always the easiest, but the first step to gorgeous, manageable locks is knowing your hair porosity.

Aside from your curl pattern, hair porosity is the single most important thing you need to know about your hair. Your porosity level determines what kind of hair care routine you need to adopt and which products will work best on your hair.

What Is Hair Porosity?

In a nutshell, hair porosity is how well your hair absorbs and retains moisture.

Porosity is usually genetic, but it can change throughout your life depending on a variety of factors. Exposure, heat treatments, chemical processing, and environmental damage (like pollution) can all affect your hair porosity.

Each individual hair strand you have is made up of layers. The outer layer is called the cuticle, and it looks like scales or roof shingles placed over each other. The cuticle is flexible and can open up to allow oils and water to pass in and out of your hair.

What determines hair porosity?

If your cuticle is close together and tightly compacted, then water and products will have a hard time permeating your hair strand. This means you have low porosity hair, which takes a while to dry and is more difficult to style.

On the other hand, high porosity hair is characterized by very open cuticles. This kind of hair is usually prone to frizz and drying out and needs super-rich hair care products to keep it healthy and shiny.

How Do You Test For Your Hair Porosity?

If you don’t already know your hair porosity, you should definitely test it out. You’ll learn more about your hair and what it needs, so you don’t waste time and money buying the wrong kinds of products.

There are three ways you can test your hair at home, but you can also make an appointment with us at Christo 5th Ave Salon to get an expert’s diagnosis.

To test your hair porosity yourself, you can do either a slide test, float test, or spray test.

Slide Test

The slide test is one of the easiest porosity tests you can perform any time, anywhere. It doesn’t require any materials or equipment.

With one hand, take a section of your hair and stretch it out.
Without letting go, hold the tips of your hair with your thumb and forefinger on your other hand.
Gently slide your fingers up the hair strands toward your scalp.

If it feels smooth and dense, you have low porosity hair.
If it feels mostly smooth, you have normal porosity hair.
If it feels bumpy, rough, or it breaks during the test, you have high porosity hair.

Float Test

The float test is a very common way to check your hair porosity. Your hair needs to be clean and free of products, so it’s best to do this test after showering. Make sure your hair is dry before performing the test.

Take a couple strands of clean hair, whether from your head or a brush.
Fill up a glass with clean, room temperature water.
Drop the strands of hair into the glass, and observe how the hair reacts.

If the hair floats at the top even after several minutes, you have low porosity hair.
If the hair floats somewhere in the middle or slowly sinks after a few minutes, you have medium porosity hair.
If the hair quickly sinks to the bottom of the glass, you have high porosity hair.

Spray Test

For the spray test, you need a small spritzer bottle filled with water. Start out with dry hair for the most accurate results.

Take a small section of your curls. Pin back your other hair if you need to.
Spray water on your curls and observe how your hair reacts to the water.

If the water just sits on top of the hair and beads up, you have low porosity hair.
If your hair slowly absorbs the water, you have normal porosity hair.
If your hair quickly absorbs the water, you have high porosity hair.

Low, Medium, and High Porosity Hair

Now that you know how porous your hair is, you can take much better care of it! Here we break down the basics of caring for low, medium/normal, and high porosity hair.

Low Porosity Hair Characteristics

Low porosity hair has a tightly-bound, compact cuticle layer. Your cuticles will lay flat and smooth, and don’t open up easily to allow moisture in or out.
One of the major characteristics of low porosity hair is that it takes a while for your hair to get fully wet, but it also takes a long time for it to dry after a shower.

Products tend to sit on and build up on top of your hair instead of penetrating it. This means that styling and coloring are much more difficult on low porosity hair. On the upside, your hair is less prone to damage and breaking. Plus, low porosity makes your hair look shiny, bouncy, and healthy.

Products for Low Porosity Hair

To prevent product build-up underneath your cuticle layer, stick to light conditioning oils like argan and grapeseed. A deep therapy masque is also a great option. It’s best to apply products when your hair is damp instead of fully dry. You can also use a moderate amount of heat to open up your cuticles when styling.

Medium Porosity Hair Characteristics

If you have normal porosity hair, congratulations! The hardest part is over. Medium levels of porosity are the lowest-maintenance of the three kinds of hair. Your hair easily absorbs and retains moisture, as demonstrated in your full, bouncy, and elastic locks.

Products for Medium Porosity Hair

Luckily for you, your hair will hold up well to styling and coloring. However, your hair can still get damaged from exposure to the elements or harsh chemicals, so be careful about the kinds of products you put on your hair.

Regularly do deep conditioning treatments, such as a deep therapy masque , to maintain your healthy hair.

High Porosity Hair Characteristics

If you’ve colored your hair or made it go through a harsh heat or chemical treatment, chances are you have high porosity hair.

However, even with virgin hair, you could still have highly-porous cuticles thanks to genetics or your environment.

High porosity hair has wide-open cuticles with gaps and holes, so it can easily absorb water and products. This also means that it dries out quickly, leaving your hair dehydrated, frizzy, and tangled.

While butter and oils can cause buildup on high porosity hair, and even lead to more damage, moisturizing conditioner can help your hair stay healthy.

DIY Super Easy Holiday Hair Styles!

Step 1.

Gather hair into one hand as if you’re making a ponytail near your crown, slightly off to one side that you prefer.

5 DIY Halloween Costumes for the Curlies!

Halloweekend is just about a week away – is your costume ready? No? Don’t worry, mine either. It’s typical of me to wait until last minute to scramble around and look for what I’m going to pull off this year.

Since I’ve been all about embracing my natural curl texture this year, I’ve thought of a few costumes that will compliment my wild curls. Here’s a list of great ideas for all the curlies who are having trouble on what to pull off this year:

1. Sandy from Grease

Use Curlisto’s Structura Lotion and Control I Gel to create Sandy’s voluminous curls. Pin your curls to one side for a real Grease vibe. This costume can easily be found in your closet – grab some high wasted black pants, an off the shoulder black top, and your leather jacket. If you’re like me and inherited a head full of curls from Mom, there’s a good chance the two of you approached your curls in very different ways as you grew up. From a child to a teenager, my mom painfully brushed out my curls often and once I stepped in to high school and college, straightening my hair took up majority of my time during the week. Thankfully, attitudes about natural curly hair have changed over generations, and today, there are far more advanced curl products, tutorials, and inspiration that exist for natural curls than ever before.

And ever since I stepped foot into Christo Fifth Avenue about 10 years ago, I knew there was faith in embracing my natural curl texture. So I made it a priority that my daughter grows up loving her hair and feels her absolute best about her curls, just opposite of what I went through my childhood years.

If you’re a mom with a little one filled with curly locks, then it’s essential to know how to manage your kid’s curls as they grow up. Here are some helpful Curlisto curly Q kid tips:

I personally feel like as soon as my body gets used to the ridiculous humidity and NYC heat, it suddenly vanishes and just like that the colder seasons quickly creep up on us! That being said, seasonal changes are bound to cause pesky issues like a dry, itchy, moisture-zapped scalp!

I assume I’m not the only one to struggle with this kind of issue so here are some healthy tips to help make that seasonal transition a tad bit easier:

Tomorrow, we welcome the fall season, which means we’re quickly going to be transitioning from hot, humid weather to cooler, drier weather and that means your curls may go through some change due to the drop in temperate. Which means that our artistic team at Christo Fifth Avenue went straight to work, twirling their fingers all night long to create beautiful braids, curls, and up do’s to some lovely single women of NYC. Christo Fifth Avenue partnered with Three Day Rule, which is a unique stress-free dating app, for their Night of Beauty event. The night consisted of little booths that were occupied by hair, make up, skin, and nail touch ups as well as some jewelry and clothing shopping all on a scenic rooftop in Midtown Manhattan.

Our senior designers, Mariana and Ivan, were the only hair stylists at the event so you can only imagine how many ladies wanted to get their locks touched up before the single men arrived! HIP HIP HOORAY! Cheers to the weekend! I always get happy that Friday is finally here and it’s time to relax, rejuvenate, and hang out with friends! For all of you who live in NYC and plan on being out and about this weekend, the struggle is real. It is hot and humid with one day full of rain and the next day pure sunshine; and often that means your hair goes for a toss.

Not only will it take place this weekend, but your hair will be robbed all summer by humidity, hot styling tools, swimming in chlorinated pools/salt water, and more, so even though there’s moisture in the air, there isn’t much in your hair. And the result? Extremely pesky frizz ��

This is why styling your hair with the correct products this season is so important. To beat the frizz this weekend, I tend to begin my styling when the hair is wet so I can mold it to how it will stay all day long. I begin my styling process with a nickel size of Repair Cream right on to my fingertips and run it through the ends of my hair. A little bit of this will go a long way and will keep your strands moisturized all day and night!

Then, I move onto my favorite magical styler: Lotion PLUS . I’m convinced that Lotion PLUS was made from the frizz free Gods! Christo Fifth Avenue was very proud to be a part of the hectic backstage scene creating the hottest runway hair styles and make up for designers and their models.

From The NYLON Project to Olivine Gabbro SS 17′ Collection, a full on flirty ponytail was the go to hair do!

Here’s how to get the exact look in 8 easy steps from the experts at Christo Fifth Avenue:

STEP 1: Start by washing hair with Botanical Shampoo and Botanical Rinse , a great go for daily hair care. This combo is especially great during NYFW because it is suitable for all hair textures!

If you are a fan of Curlisto (and since you are on this website right now, I assume that you are) then you know that once a month our creative director Christo teaches his trademarked Diametrix Cutting technique to salon professionals from all around the country! The full day class takes place at our Manhattan flagship location where each stylist is able to practice the technique on live curly haired models! There are three cutting techniques taught in the class: these include Diametrix, which is a texturizing cut created by separating the hair into 12 equal parts. Then there is the Diagonal cut which is cut at a diagonal angle from the face. The third is the VS Diametrix cut which is a unique face framing cut. Christo also teaches the Curlisto styling method. It has been over a year since I last colored my hair and I am getting antsy. It’s time for a change but at this point I am more or less over the purple tips/ pink streaks phase of my early college years. I am a brunette with dark features (an autumn!) and so there are certain colors that simply do not work for me (namely shades of platinum blonde). Finding the color that works for you can be a challenge, and maintaining that color an even bigger challenge. Luckily, we have some tips for you! We have divided coloring into winter, spring, summer and fall color tones which we will explain below.

Summer: Summers are light haired and light eyed but dark skinned. Therefore the best hair colors are golden and platinum blondes, caramel browns and champagne colors. Keep your blonde looking fresh with Curlisto Colorective line.

New York City-based Christo Fifth Avenue is a fantastic beauty destination in the Big Apple. The sprawling salon boasts sparkling chandelier, gleaming red bookcases, and sleek black accents. The vibe is glamorous yet accessible. We caught up with salon owner and hairstylist Christo to talk about his fifteenth anniversary in the business, hot hair trends for fall, and the one dish he always makes when the weather turns chilly.

How did you get into the business?
First and foremost, I have to thank my family for introducing me to the beauty and hair industry. At the age of twelve, I was already on my feet, working in my family’s salon in Cyprus. During my teenage years, I ventured off to Paris to hone my skills and gain Parisian clientele. By my early twenties, I was leading a team of artists around the world to educate salon professionals. Finally, I came to the states, set up shop in New York City, and opened my first flag ship salon in 2001. It has been a remarkable and successful journey!

When did your love for the art of hairstyling start?
I fell in love with everything hair at the tender age of twelve, when I started my apprenticeship at my family’s salon. They inspired my creativity and showed me the ropes on how to handle several clients at one time, work diligently with my time, and make clients feel and look their best. Being able to express yourself through any form of art is incredible. In my case, I use the art of hairdressing to show off my dedication and passion.

You’re celebrating fifteen years in the industry. Congrats! Tell us about this milestone and what that means for you:
There are no words to describe how accomplished I feel on celebrating fifteen years of owning my business. It took years of hard work and dedication to be where I am today. Every day that I get to walk into my salon is a constant reminder that I am doing what I love. This milestone only motivates me to continue improving my space into the best environment possible for all of our clients and staff.

Favorite part of the job:
The best part of being a hairdresser is constantly meeting new people and making a positive change in their lives. The thrill I have when a client looks in the mirror and is brought to tears because they didn’t think they could look so beautiful is inexplicable. It is rewarding to realize that I am the reason for making someone feel better about themselves. To know that my clients continuously come to my salon to relax, unwind, and see me not only as their stylist, but also as their friend, is the greatest feeling.

Top hair trend for fall:
Fall is when everyone decides to change up their usual, go-to hair color for something completely different and exciting. I’ve been receiving a lot of pastel ombre requests this season. From your root color to a pixie pink, or lilac shade towards the bottom, this style is an exclusive, toned-down way to wear an unconventional color. It works perfectly on any hair length.

Tell us about your personal and home style:
I like big, open places, so after living in my not-so-spacious Manhattan apartment, I decided to move to Long Island City. There, I have a comfortable, roomy brownstone which I rebuilt to include a new loft and rooftop. My rooftop is one of my favorite places to sit back and relax, and I love looking out at the beautiful view of the river and the concrete jungle of NYC. My home is decorated with a lot of Chinese antiques and modern furniture.

You’re also an amazing cook. Please share your favorite fall recipe:
One of my favorite dishes to cook is Garides Saganaki, or in other words, baked shrimp with feta. Heat 5 tablespoons of olive oil in a wide skillet over medium heat. Add minced garlic and season with salt and pepper, then stir for about 5 minutes. Fill a saucepan with water and bring to a boil, add whole tomatoes and cook for about 3 minutes. Immediately put tomatoes in a bowl of cold water to cool, then drain. Cut the tomatoes into thick pieces. Preheat your over to 425 degrees. Add your tomatoes with the olive oil, salt, and pepper from the pan and cook until mixture is juicy. Transfer the mixture to a baking dish. Prepare your shrimp in a mixing bowl, while seasoning it with 1 tablespoon of olive oil, salt, and pepper. Arrange shrimp over the tomato mixture in one layer. Sprinkle feta cheese and oregano and bake for 10 minutes until tomatoes are bubbling and feta has browned slightly. Lastly, sprinkle dry mint and serve!

Favorite travel destination:
Greece. There are just so many islands to visit. Every year when I go, I try to cross a new island off my travel bucket list. It seems every new island I experience is even more beautiful than the last! Greece has it all: a mix of history, beautiful beaches, delicious food, and incredible parties.

Normally when someone tells me this I thank them while internally screaming in their general direction that if they had my huge, unmanageable curls they would likely regret this statement. However, to be fair, we always want what we don’t have. That’s what is so great about being a woman. If you want straight hair, you can have it. Long hair? That’s possible too. Bangs? Get yourself a clip on a la Kendall Jenner. And curls are a possibility too. Here is our “How To” on how to fake the natural curly hair that you weren’t born with.

Step 1: Pick your iron – Different types of irons produce different types of curls. A ceramic iron may produce minimal damage but a tourmaline iron produces silkier curls. A 2″ iron is good for long hair where a 1″ is perfect for short and so on.

Step 2: Pick your curl – The way you wrap your hair around the wand matters. You can twist your strand before wrapping it to create mermaid like waves or you can lay it flat for Shirley Temple like spirals.

How To: Flawless Curly Hair

This Past weekend after not having seen my family for over a month, I couldn’t help but notice the amount of positive feedback given to my hair.

“The curls are so defined, not frizzy at all!”
“I have never seen it look so healthy!”

For most of my life I have struggled not only to figure out a proper regimen for keeping my hair healthy and vibrant, but also to find a cut that flattered my face and hair type. In fact, until very recently I had no idea what type of hair I had at all!

I have learned a lot from working with the Curlisto team, and as a girl who used to believe that Herbal Essences was the best thing to happen to hair care, I want to share with you some of the best lessons I have learned.

1. Getting The Right Haircut: I wanted my dead ends gone without sacrificing any length, something that no stylist in the past has ever found it within themselves to respect. Moreover, I had never had a haircut that I liked until I started working with Curlisto. With the trademarked Diametrix cut, I lost none of my length and was simply left with face framing haircut, shaped to flatter my face and features. The Diametrix cut is available at all Curlisto locations.

2. Using The Right Products: I used to treat my hair with the usual hair spray/ hair gel combination bought at any local CVS. Now my routine is thus: condition hair thoroughly using Curlisto Natural Conditioner , follow with a dollop of Curlisto Lotion Plus and Curlisto Control II Gel if your hair needs that extra hold. My hair has never looked so soft and in control.

3. Thoughts: Is Curly Hair A Feminist Statement?

As women, we are often judged immediately based on our outer appearance. This could be applied to men too of course but (for once) we are not talking about that. Women are of course judged for many things: our bodies, our pliability, our dress. However, what we are going to discuss here is the judgement directed toward women’s hair.

Women’s hair. An innocuous subject to discuss of course, but here we are. What judgement befalls a woman with wild, unruly locks? What befalls her tame, fine haired counterpart?

Let’s of course preface this by saying that if you have a normal, level headed mature man at home with you, he probably doesn’t give a f*** what your hair looks like. He’s too busy thinking about his Android or his job or your pretty face or the next episode of South Park. But then there are men (AHEM Donald Trump) who go about their days judging everybody but themselves. And who better to direct these judgements toward but the closest woman in their vicinity?

But, I digress. The truth is, women with straight hair are, unfortunately preferred by the general American population to those with curly hair. Why is that? Because it is perceived to be less “ethnic”? Perhaps you just appear neater with straight hair. Less, “eccentric”.

So, what does that mean for us “curlies”? When you are preparing yourself for a business luncheon, an interview, an important date, do you find yourself reaching for the flattening iron, the gel, the blow dryer? What does it say to everyone if you opt out?

That is the question. Is curly hair inherently feminist? No, not exactly. The feminist statement comes from a woman’s refusal to conform. It is more that the constant attention paid to a woman’s appearance in general is strongly misogynistic. A woman will be who she is regardless of what she looks like, so where does this judgement come from?

Moreover, the question I want to leave off with- (did you really think all would be answered in a blog post on a salon website? Please) -is this: Why, in 2016, are women judged more for what grows out of their head, than what goes on inside of it?
